What is Aikido?

Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), Founder of Aikido

Aikido is a modern martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), its revered founder. He mastered the deepest principles of traditional Japanese martial arts and underwent rigorous spiritual training to create it.

In Aikido, you don't compete with your opponent using brute force. Instead, its techniques are born from "irimi" (entering) and "tenkan" (turning) body movements, combined with focused "kokyu-ryoku" (breath power). Through cooperative practice, participants hone their skills together, aiming to cultivate both mind and body.
Because  Aikido doesn't involve competing for superiority over others, there are no matches or competitions.

Yoshinkan Aikido is a prominent school of Aikido in Japan, founded in the early Showa period (roughly the 1920s-1940s) by Gozo Shioda (1915-1994). Shioda Gozo, often referred to as the "God of Aikido," is known as a legendary figure in the world of Japanese martial arts. He possessed exceptional skill and unparalleled spiritual depth, making immense contributions to the development of Aikido.

In his youth, Master Shioda trained for many years under Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, diligently refining his techniques. His movements were remarkably fast and impeccably precise, earning high praise for his skillful utilization of an opponent's force. Beyond merely acquiring techniques, Gozo Shioda also advocated the philosophy that "Aikido is the mind, embodying the spirit of harmony," and he trained numerous disciples.

Master Shioda's life was marked by an unwavering spirit of inquiry and perseverance in martial arts. His influence extended far beyond Japan, continuing to be a great inspiration to Aikido enthusiasts worldwide.
